or families or singles,
Toronto in spring is a cele-
bration of the arts, both
city-wide and in the Jewish
community. For singles there are
many different groups whose
scheduled activities and pro-
grams offer opportunities to meet
people while enjoying the city's
attraction.
This year, to welcome the
spring season and to celebrate its
100th performance, the Gersh-
win musical Crazy For You (at
the Royal Alexandra Theater)
treated its audience to compli-
mentary bouquets of daisies and
other spring flowers.
Meanwhile, the Princess of
Wales Theater, because of the
great success of its musical Miss
Saigon, has lowered prices on
over 600 seats (in the orchestra
and lower balcony) to attract new
audiences who have never seen
live theater.
A new smash hit musical,
Napoleon, is now enjoying its pre-
miere at the Elgin Theatre. A
Canadian production, this musi-
cal will go to London's theater dis-
trict from Toronto. Another play
delighting audiences this spring
is the 'heavenly musical' Forever
Plaid at the New Yorker Theatre.
One of the most successful
plays in Toronto this year is the
musical Showboat, which goes
from here to Broadway in the fall.
Based on the story by Edna Fer-
ber, this Jerome Kern and Oscar
Hammerstein classic can be seen
at the North York Performing
Arts Center.
The beautifully restored Pan-
tages Theatre is currently run-
ning the Phantom of the Opera,
and Neil Simon's Odd Couple will
be presented at the O'Keefe Cen-
ter June 7-11.
Those who enjoy theater in the
countryside can see great plays
at two nearby locations. The
Stratford Festival is showing this
year an excellent production of
Twelfth Night, Long Day's Jour-
ney Into Night, The Pirates of
Penzance, Cyrano de Bergerac,
and several other plays.
The Shaw Festival, in Nia-
gara-on-the-Lake, features Arms
and the Man, Front Page, Bus-
man's Holiday and Lady Be Good
among its plays for this season.
The Kinneret Club, Na'amat
group, is sponsoring an outing to
the Shaw Festival's play Front
Page on June 2. Proceeds will go
to charity, and a tax exempt re-
ceipt will be issued (416-633-
8276).
The Toronto Jewish Film So-
ciety will show two films on June
12 — My Grandparents Had a

Hotel, and Let's Fall In Love. An-
other film of Jewish interest, Ivan
and Abraham, is currently play-
ing at the Carlton Cinema.
Singles may wish to contact
Jewish Dateline (790-0110), the
non-profit introduction service
funded by the Jewish Federation
of Greater Toronto, which is cel-
ebrating its 10th anniversary this
year.
Toronto's Jewish Singles Reg-
istry, a community-based orga-
nization that serves Jewish
singles of every background, has
recently added a new Orthodox
Division.
Among the city's various sin-
gles groups there is Metro Sin-
gles (222-7111), which begins its
third anniml co-ed softball games
in June.
The New Image 50+ Singles
are planning a trip to the
Catskills for the end of July and
a membership dinner June 5.
On the art scene, the Koffler
Gallery at the Jewish Commu-
nity Center, has an exhibit of folk

paintings by Toronto artist, May-
er Kirshenblatt. Works by Cha-
gall, Kokoschka, Picasso, and
others, are on view at the Kaspar
Gallery.
Art lovers can now reach the
famous McMichael Gallery in
Kleinsburg via a daily public
transit bus, which picks up pas-
sengers at several stations.
Toronto's Holocaust Education
and Memorial Center has audio-
visual presentations Tuesdays to
Thursdays and Sundays. Do not
miss the moving Holocaust
memorial sculpture and beauti-
ful garden at Earl Bales Park,
just off Bathurst Street.
The Jewish Museum, at the
Beth Tzedec Synagogue, has
many fine objects from the Cecil
Roth Collection.
For accommodation, Toronto's
historic Royal York Hotel, near
the restored lakeshore, is a four-
star establishment offering many
amenities. Its proximity to a large
number of attractions makes it
a convenient location from which
to explore the city.

tributed to the city's development,
