Job Seekers
Up In Israel

The number of job seekers in Is-
rael rose 15.3 percent last month
compared to March, with 117,500
people registering at the Em-
ployment Service, according to
seasonally-adjusted figures re-
, leased by the Labor and Social
Affairs Ministry.
This rise follows a sharp drop
in the first quarter of the year,
•when the number of job seekers
fell from 117,800 at the end of
1993 to 101,900 in March.

Report: Energy
Usage Will Soar

In the next decade, Israel will
double its electricity production
capability, consumption of pe-
troleum-based products will grow
by 50 percent and natural gas us-
age will increase by at least 50
percent.
These were some of the figures
presented by Energy and Infra-
structure Minister Moshe Sha-
hal to the Knesset in a report on
this year's ministry activities.
The survey also contains de-
tails of arrangements between
local authorities and Palestinian
authorities concerning petrole-
um product standards. Israel has
agreed to permit the import of pe-
troleum products from areas un-
der Palestinian jurisdiction on
condition they meet Jordanian
and other international stan-
dards.
The autonomous areas may
import gasoline as long as it is
colored differently from gasoline
available in Israel markets and
is not sold in Israel.
