IC MAY 27, 1994 Sunday, May 29 — Lamed VIN Awards liven Clockwise: Harvey Beim, Mr. Dennis Frank and wife Peggy, Dr. Michael and Sara Frank, Carolyn Davidson, Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum and Harry and Ann Korman O utstanding members of six Detroit Reform congregations will be hon- ored with Lamed Vav awards at the 10th annual Fund for Reform Ju- daism Dinner at Temple Beth El June 2. Harvey Beim of Temple Kol Ami, Dennis and Peggy Frank of Temple Beth El, Dr. Michael and Sara Frank of Temple Shir Shalom, Carolyn Davidson of Congregation Shir Tikvah, Harry and Ann Korman of Temple Israel and Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum of Temple Emanu-El are this year's honorees. Each honoree has distinguished him- self through significant and devoted congregational and community service. The dinner is sponsored by the Metropolitan Detroit Federation of Reform Syna- gogues (MDFRS) in support of the National Institutions of Reform Judaism. The rab- bis of the individual congregations will introduce the honorees and awards will be presented by them together with Rabbi David Hachen, regional rabbi of the North- east Lakes Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations James Jonas, president of the MDFRS and Bernard Linden, national board mem- ber of the UAHC, will speak. Society Honors Irwin Shaw or lifelong service to the Jewish com- munity of Metropolitan Detroit, Ir- win Shaw will be honored with the Fourth Leonard N. Simons History Award at the annual meeting of the Jew- ish Historical Society, 11 a.m. June 12 at the home of Marlene and Paul Borman. The program, which will honor the society's 35th anniversary, will feature humorous readings by Elizabeth and Rube Weiss. The election and installa- tion of officers and board members will take place; and Gilbert Borman, outgoing president, will give the annual report. Judith Levin Cantor has been nominated as presi- dent for the 1994-95 year. The gathering also Irwin Shaw marks the formation of the Heritage Council — an Endowment Fund to ensure the future of the Jewish Historical Society. Mr. Shaw has been active in the JHS since its inception 35 years ago. During that time, he has served on its executive and advisory committees. His professional career took place entirely within the Jew- ish community at the Fresh Air Society, the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. His proudest achievements include the acquisition of the FAS' Camp Maas site in Ortonville, estab- lishment of the annu- al Jewish Book Fair in 1952 and the creation of the Institute for Re- tried professionals (IRP) in 1986. He or- ganized the IRP while serving as executive vice president emeri- tus of the Center, a post he has held since retiring as executive vice president in 1977.
