Educational Director

the Yeshiva Beth Yehu-
dah, and Rabbi Shmuel
Irons, chairman of its edu-
cation committee, announced this
week the hiring of Rabbi
Nathaniel Lauer as the new ed-
ucational director of the Sally Al-
lan Alexander Beth Jacob School
for Girls.
Rabbi Lauer, who has served
as principal of the Beth Jacob
High School of Denver for the last
22 years, is regarded as one of the
premier educators in the Unit-
ed States, according to Rabbi
Irons. He earned his bachelor's
and master's in education and re-
ceived his rabbinical ordination
from Rabbi Mordechai Gifter of
the Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland.
"Rabbi Lauer adds a new di-
mension to the very capable lead-
ership of the Beth Jacob's school
principals, Mrs. Goldie Silver-

stein and Mrs. Florene Sperka,"
said Mr. Torgow. The Lauer fam-
ily will be moving to Detroit in
mid-July.
An open house will be held to
meet Rabbi and Mrs. Lauer on
Sunday May 29, from 7 to 9 p.m.
at the Sally Allan Alexander Beth
Jacob School for Girls. ❑

unexpected two-day trip
overseas last month,
spurred by a chance to show
support for Israel amid escalat-
ing political tension there.
The Solidarity Mission To Is-
rael, conducted April 25-26, re-
cruited nearly 400 Jews from 57
communities across the United
States. Sponsored and subsidized
by the United Jewish Appeal, the
$500 trek aimed at boosting
American commitment to Israel
in the face of what seems to be a
decline in tourism from the Unit-
ed States.

, attack in Afula, which killed sev-
en persons, has deterred U.S.
travelers from vacationing in Is-
rael. Many would-be travelers
have canceled their trips, but the
same is not true of European
tourists, the officials said.
Amid greetings and fanfare,
Jim and Fred Safran landed with
the other missionaires at Ramat
David Air Force base, whereupon
they were taken to Afula.
"(Israelis) wanted to take us to
places that are supposedly 'not
safe.' But I felt safe, absolutely,"
said Fred Safran, of Farmington
Hills. 'They also told us that their
