creased accountability and broad-
ened our appeal. We had hoped
Federation would want to be a
part of this success story."
In making the presentation to
Federation, Mr. Mon suggested
a hope for future parity in fund-
ing $400 to $500 per student
—but only asked for a number
for 1994-'95 that would symbol-
ize a growing partnership.
Federation leadership speaks
often of its commitment to Jew-
ish education. Its day-school ben-
eficiaries include Hillel, Akiva
Hebrew Day School, Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah and Yeshiva
Gedolah. Those institutions re-
ceived $834,000 in allocations for
the 1993-'94 school year.
Federation distinguishes be-
tween Akiva and Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah, both Orthodox day
schools, by the modern and Zion-
ist presence of the former versus
the more traditional slant to the
latter.
"Darchei Torah and Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah have similar con-
stituencies. Some parents have
children attending both schools,"
Mr. Ziffer said. "The main issue
is really resources.

— Larry Ziffer

"There's no question that if we
had a better Campaign the idea
of two beneficiaries occupying a
similar area would remain an is-
) sue. We've spent a lot of money
in the past to keep Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah afloat and help it sta-
bilize. Some in the education di-
vision believe it would seem odd
for us to try and strengthen
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and sup-
port another school which com-
petes with it."
Mr. Ziffer added that Federa-
tion's door remains open to
Darchei Torah but added, "I
would guess they're pretty frus-
trated with us by now."
Sarah Kahn, principal of
Darchei Torah, said she expects
220 students for the 1994-'95
school year which will include
pupils from grades kindergarten
through seventh grade for boys,
and through sixth grade for girls.
Each year the school adds a
grade to its curriculum.
'We're setting a tone for edu-
cation in this city. Competition
is healthy. It keeps everyone on
their toes," Ms. Kahn said. "I be-
lieve we are a community school.
Our students volunteer at Yad
Ezra, participate in Jewish Com-
munity Council projects for stu-
dents, go to Borman Hall and
Fleischman Residence. We're
teaching the students what it
means to be a part of the com-
munity.
"It's time we are recognized as
a community school." 11
