for 1994-95.
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit recently de-
nied Darchei Torah beneficiary
status again.
Darchei Torah, the Orthodox
day school, opened its doors at
the Agency for Jewish Education
Building in Southfield eight years
ago.
Federation has turned down
and put off funding decisions re-
garding the school in past years.
According to Larry Ziffer, Fed-
eration's planning director, a flat
Allied Jewish. Campaign this
year made consideration of an-
other beneficiary agency almost
impossible.
In addition, Federation's edu-
cation division views Darchei
Torah as a school targeting the
same audience as Federation-re-
cipient Yeshiva Beth Yehudah.
"There's a list of protocol in
funding. As a rule, we don't fund
duplication of services. Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah and Darchei
Torah compete for students," said
Douglas Bloom, chairman of Fed-
eration's education division. "I'm

get funding, but when the Cam-
paign is down we cannot take
from other agencies to support a
new one."
Mr. Ziffer said Darchei Torah's
presentations to Federation were
"thoughtful, showing how they
have built up their organization
structure. However, the educa-
tion division identified Darchei
Torah's niches and ideologies as
similar to that reflected by Yeshi-
va Beth Yehudah."
Eliyahu Allon, chairman of
Darchei Torah's finance com-
mittee and presenter of the
school's case to Federation, said
he is disappointed but not sur-
prised by the outcome.
"I think Darchei Torah has
been painted as competition tak-
ing away from Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah and that argument has
found a welcome audience," Mr.
Allon said. "Detroit is growing up
as a religious community and
growing quickly. A second or a
third school isn't a duplication of
services.

ucation success story of the last
