PROUD OF: Her year as presi-
dent of the Central States Region
of Young Judaea, the youth
Zionist group of the Hadassah
organization. The region, en-
compassing Michigan, Ohio, Ken-
tucky and parts of West Virginia,
boosted membership 28 percent
this year.

HOW: Rebecca has been involved
with Young Judaea for 10 years.
"It was most fulfilling to be region
president," she said, "because I
could do more than what I could
do just in the city. For 10 years,
people programmed for me. This
year, I got to help others."
Her position as region presi-
dent meant numerous trips to
Columbus, Ohio. Columbus, as a
central geographic point for the
region, played host to three con-
ventions for the teen members of
Young Judaea, and two for
younger members. "We would
usually bus down, and get lost to-
gether," Rebecca said.
Most of the convention activi-
ties have to do with Israel and
Zionism. "We did a lot this year
on current events because it has
been a monumental year" with
the Middle East peace process.
The region board planned this
weekend's convention in Colum-
bus several weeks ago. It includ-
ed a mock peace process,
complete with Arab and Israeli
delegations, press conferences, a
press center and peace treaties.
But because of the agreement
signed and implemented by Is-
rael and the Palestine Liberation
Organization two weeks ago, the
conference activities may now in-
clude a session on current events,
a mock United Nations session
to discuss helping Israel's ab-
sorption centers, plus the regional
elections and leadership training
for next year.
At a recent convention for pre-
teens, the Young Judaeans had
a Jewish hero academy in which
the youth pinned badges on capes
they wore representing ancient
and modern Jewish figures.

POSTSCRIPT: Last year, Re-
becca participated in Project Dis-
covery, Detroit's four-month
program for high school students
to live and study in Israel.
It whet her appetite to return
to Israel next fall for Young Ju-
daea's Yearcourse.
She will live three months at
Hebrew University in Jerusalem,
three months at a development

town, one month on a moshav
with an Israeli family and spend
two months as a volunteer. She
may work with a shelter for bat-
tered women, with Israeli boy or
girl scouts, or at a Youth Aliyah
village.
The following year, Rebecca
plans to attend the University of
Michigan. ❑
