"I've never laughed so much nor
have cried so much in one day,"
said Marc Beals of West loom

international terminal brought
tears to our eyes and pride to our
community. A year prior the con-

The Proper
Response
Jews must be much more proac-
tive in reinforcing the fact that
any form of prejudice or bigotry
is unacceptable, intolerable and
contrary to the foundation of our
society.
Likewise, Jews should not lend
support to organizations, insti-
tutions or individuals supporting,
affirmatively — or tacitly — any
form of racism, anti-Semitism, or
other form of bigotry.
However, we must also recog-
nize that we cannot isolate our-
selves from or generalize about
any race, ethnic, or religious
group. Just as we did not end re-
lations with Catholics despite the
anti-Semitism of the Vatican and
the vicious pronouncements of
Father Coughlin, we cannot use
the unacceptable actions of some
as an excuse to segregate our-
selves and refuse to interact with
the diverse members of the De-
troit metropolitan community.
Jews learned many years ago
that we are much too small a
group to be able to protect our
own interests solely by our own
efforts. We have developed many
friends in the African-American
community, such as Damon
Keith, Horace Sheffield and for-
mer U.S. Rep. William Gray.
We must continue to develop
and improve upon these rela-
tionships, while at the same time
make a greater effort to develop
friendships and cooperative ef-
forts in our own neighborhoods
with African-Americans, Chal-
deans and others. In this man-
ner, we will be able to break down
the misconceptions and isolate
the racists who divide us as
Americans.

goes on in the Jewish communi-

The radical settlers in the West

Jewish community than do mem-

avoided is generalizing.
A discussion of race and big-

not a meat axe.

`On Line'
Vs. 'In Line'
Regarding why New Yorkers say
"on line" instead of "in line" (Tell
Me Why, April 29): Upon entry
to the United States through El-
lis Island, and now immigration
at airports, officials would and
continue to tell new settlers
"stand on the line" (on the floor).

Thanks for the excellent article
in the April 22 Jewish News. It
totally captured my thoughts and
feelings on the United Jewish Ap-
peal marketing campaign.
The only, very slight correction
is that the Women's Division pm-
Colette Avital
posts in Brussels, Paris, Montre-
al and Boston before her ap-
pointment as Ambassador to
Portugal. She also served the For-
eign. Ministry as a communica-
tions and media specialist.
The event will be a dessert re-
ception. For information, call the
American Zionist Movement,
