ountry style bed and
breakfast is probably the
fastest growing new trend
in Israeli tourism.
You can find basic accommo-
dation in beautiful off-the-beat-
en-track locations at cheaper
rates than hotels and guest-
houses. Each unit contains a
clean, pleasant bedroom with a
shower and toilet and a small
kitchenette with a refrigerator
and coffee corner.
Although some private fami-
lies offer this facility, when book-
ing from abroad it is best to
concentrate on the many moshav-
im and kibbutzim in this scheme.
Each kibbutz/moshav usually
sets aside a number of rooms for
visitors; and you will have the op-
tion of purchasing additional
meals in their communal dining
room and using their facilities
such as swimming pool, sports
courts and children's play-
grounds. But most important,
you will experience that wonder-
ful, relaxing feeling of calm coun-
try living and breathe clear, pure
air.
The Ministry of Tourism high-
ly recommends the B & B ac-
commodations, but as Timna
Most, head of the B & B depart-
ment explains, at this stage they
cannot give their official approval
or accept responsibility for each
individual address.
At the moment, bookings have
to be made directly, as there is no
central booking agency. However,
once you arrive in Israel, the Min-
istry of Tourism's offices can give
you computer print-outs of B &
B addresses in whichever part of
the country you are considering
visiting. Remember, most of these
places are in out-of-the-way spots
so the best way to get around is
by hiring a car.

The pool at Kibbutz Gat.

Following are a few examples
of the places included in this
scheme, their facilities and local
attractions. The high season rates
are between $55-$60 per couple,
with each additional child in the
same room about $12. However
these rates should be checked
and confirmed when booking.
Main meals usually cost an ad-
ditional $6-$7.
Unless the settlement is a re-
ligious one, it cannot be assumed
that the food served is kosher.
However, some of the kibbutzim
have guesthouses with ak2shrut
certificate and it may be possible
for you to buy your additional
meals in this guesthouse. Always
check in advance if this facility is
available.
