No, it wasn't bad news. Mr.
Weiss learned from Harry Glanz,
executive vice president of Cap-
ital Mortgage, that he had won
the company's "Zero Mortgage
Payments for a Year" contest.
Capital Mortgage will send
Mr. Weiss a monthly check cov-
ering his principal and interest
payments from May 1, 1994,
through April 1, 1995. In all, he'll
be receiving about $5,000.
"To be honest, I had forgotten
that I had entered the contest
until Harry called," Mr. Weiss
said. "I entered before I refi-
nanced. I was shocked and hap-
py when I found out I won
because I'd never won anything."
Mr. Weiss' name was drawn
from among approximately 7,000
entries that Capital Mortgage re-
ceived through the mail and at
its Southfield and Rochester of-
fices during the contest's two-
month run. The drawing was
held on income-tax deadline day
— April 15.
"The response to the contest
was phenomenal. We had no idea
how many entries we would re-

ceive," said Mr. Glanz, who point-
ed out that entrants did not have
to have a mortgage with.capital.
"Ironically, I couldn't reach
David on the 15th (a Friday) or
over the weekend," Mr. Glanz
said. "I finally got in touch with
him at work on Monday (April
18). He went crazy. David's a
good guy. It's been a pleasure to
work with him on the contest."
Mr. Glanz is quite familiar
with Mr. Weiss' Oak Park neigh-
borhood. He lived just a few
blocks away from Mr. Weiss'
home for more than 20 years.
Mr. Weiss, 27, the son of Las-
zlo and Avra Weiss of West
Bloomfield and the oldest of
three sons, is a graduate of West
Bloomfield High School and the
University of Michigan.
He is the office manager for
Enterprise Leasing Co. in De-
troit, a car-rental and leasing
agency.
Mr. Weiss says he's thinking
about making double mortgage
payments during the next 12
months to pay off more of the
principal and gain more equity.
The contest was Capital Mort-
gage's way "of giving something
back to the community for their
support during 1993," Mr. Glanz
said. "We couldn't think of any
better day to hold the drawing
than the dreaded tax day.
"It was a pleasure to have an
opportunity to tell somebody on
April 15 that he won something."
Because of the contest's suc-
cess, Mr. Glanz said Capital Mort-
gage is considering holding other
competitions in the future. Li
