American Heart Association

WERE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE

Aharon Remez, 74, founder of the
Israeli air force, died in
Jerusalem April 18. As a teen-
ager, Mr. Remez joined the Ha-
ganah, Israel's pre-state defense
force. A Spitfire pilot in Britain's
Royal Air Force during World
War II, he helped create Ha-
ganah's postwar flying service
and led the Israeli air force af-
ter independence in 1948. Mr. Re-
mez served as ambassador to
Britain in the '60s and helped
draft U.N. Security Council Res-
olution 242, which called upon Is-
rael to withdraw from territories
conquered in the '67 war - a key
objective of Middle East diplo-
macy.
He is survived by cousins,
Frank and Nissan Uten of Wind-
sor, Sharron Uten Zamczyk of
Farmington Hills, Darlene Uten
Zimmermann of Branford, Conn.,
Aaron Katzman of Southfield,
Bernice Tollefson of Encino, Calif.

Jerusalem (JTA) Retired Brig.
Gen. Aharon Yariv, 74, widely re-
garded as the most prominent of
Israel's military intelligence
chiefs, was buried here last week
with full military honors. He had
suffered a stroke in September
1993 while driving and had
crashed his car into a tree on a

direct talks with the PLO if it
would agree to cease terrorism
