Gallery Mounts
New Works

In California artist Squeak Cam-
wath's first exhibition at O.K.
. Harris/David Klein Gallery, she
will be showing her luminously
expressive painting. Ms. Cam-
wath incorporates poetic imagery
and childlike symbols onto planes
of raw, radiant color. These
haunting pictographs — a bird,
a beehive, a glass, a telephone, a
foot — emerge, floating under
shimmering layers of color.
In Ms. Carnwath's search for self
expression, she considers univer-
sal issues about our culture re-
garding women, health, crime, race
and other sociological attitudes. The
artist's message is ultimately about
observation and contemplation.
Detroit artist Valerie Parks
also will debut at the gallery with
her first exhibition. Ms. Parks
continues to explore the combi-
nation of thickly layered paint
and enigmatic narration. At first
glance, the paintings remind the
viewer of ancient figural reliefs.
However, the well painted spaces
between and around the figures
add other dimensions to the com-
position. Along with titles such
as When Pigs Fly and Dumb as
a Post, the viewer is able to bring
his own insights and associations
to each piece.
O.K. Harris/David Klein
Gallery is located at 430 N. Wood-
ward, Birmingham. The gallery
hours are Tuesday through Sat-
urday, 11-6 p.m., with extended
hours to 8:30 p.m. on the first
Thursday of each month.
