but when we worked there is was
hush, hush."
After the army, the two re-
mained friends and both pound-
ed the New York City pavement
together.
"It's funny," Mr. Weiss said,
"When I first met Tony he had
just finished working in summer
stock, and I didn't believe him
when he said he was a good ac-
tor. But he showed me all of his
rave reviews from critics, and
they were great. Then I saw him
act — and he really was a great
actor."
Mr. Randall remembers those
days with fondness as well.
"Rube and I, along with a whole
group of Detroit actors, including
Clem Fowler and Whit Vernon,
would sit at the drugstore at NBC
hoping to get work," he recalled.
In 1952, Randall got his big
break when Fred Coe cast him as
Harvey Weskit in the NBC sit-
com "Mr. Peepers." It was dur-
ing the days of live TV, and he
played Wally Cox's sidekick for
four years. According to Mr. Ran-
dall, it was that role that opened
up many other doors.
"Up until that time, I had bit
parts on the stage. When I be-
came known on television, I land-
ed lead roles on Broadway," said
Mr. Randall, who has appeared
in more than 300 plays, includ-
ing the cynical role of the reporter
in Inherit the Wind. He's also
been in more than 40 movies, in-
cluding Pillow Talk and Will

For now, his focus is his Na-
tional Actors Theater, which is
finishing its second season. Past
productions include The Crucible,
Saint Joan and The Government
Inspector.
Mr. Randall has a great deal
of support from the acting com-
munity and many of Broadway's
most talented actors have either
performed or have committed
themselves to star in future pro-
ductions.
Good friends Eli Wallach and
Ann Jackson starred in Mr. Ran-
dall's latest production, Clifford
Odets' The Flowering Peach.
It's not a secret that Mr. Ran-
dall hopes his venture will re-
main prosperous and become a
permanent fixture on Broadway.
"I can only hope there will always
be a place for the classics on the
American stage," he said. "I am
doing everything that I can to
make it happen." ❑
