Israel Films
In Chicago
The Jewish Film Project, a joint
venture of Spertus Institute of
Jewish Studies and the Film
Center of the School of the Art In-
stitute, takes a detour in may for
a look at Mexico's Jewish Com-
munity and continues through
June and July to explore films
from Israel in "New Israeli Cin-
ema."
These films will be shown at
either of two locations: the Film
Center at the School of the Art
Institute, Columbus Drive and
Jackson Blvd.; or the Skokie The-
ater, 7924 Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
Admission is charged. For ad-
vance ticket sales or more infor-
mation on these films call the
Jewish Film Project office, (312)
322-1769.
Bride to Be takes an enchant-
ing glimpse at Mexico City's two
great waves of Jewish immigra-
tion, each maintaining their dis-
tinctiveness: the Sephardic
emigres who took leave of the Ot-
toman Empire to pursue their
Spanish-Jewish lifestyle in a
more promising atmosphere; and
the Ashkanazim, who were ea-
ger to snap up visas to most any-
where on the eve of Hitler's
invasion of Poland.
Blind Man's Bluff is Aner
(nephew of Otto) Preminger's in-
timate look at the cinematically
neglected, confined world of the
fiercely cultivated, hyper-Euro-
pean israeli.
The Revenge of Itzik Finkel-
stein is a wildly comic, moral fan-
tasy. Finkelstein, a 40-year-old
bachelor who sleeps on the couch
at his mother's home devises one
more business venture that, at
last, cannot but succeed.
Local Artist
At Art Fair
Monica Steinmetz, Saginaw
artist, currently residing in
Evanston, Illinois, will exhibit her
artwork at the Birmingham Art
Fair May 14 -15.
In addition to the guache ab-
stract landscapes for which she
is known, Monica designs Jew-
ish greeting cards for several
companies with national distrib-
ution.
Cabaret Night
At BAHM
The Cultural Commission of Con-
gregation Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses will present its annual
cabaret night May 22 at 7:30 p.m.
This year's attraction will be
Broadway Encores with a "Salute
to the Great Composers of Broad-
way."
Refreshments are included.
For information, contact the syn-
agogue office, 851-6880.
