hie experts are usually
happy to talk about
fine wines, but they are
often less forthcoming
when asked to rate the cheaper
offerings on the market.
An expert attending the sym-
posium on "The Israeli Wine In-
dustry into the Next Century" at
Katzrin in the Golan Heights
was no exception. In fact, he was
so uncomfortable about recom-
mending one Israeli company's
product over another's that he
asked not to be identified by
name.
For inexpensive white wines,
he suggested two wines of the re-
cently established Barkan win-
ery, the dry Sauvignon and the

semi-dry Emerald Riesling. In
the red wines, he said the Galil
Selected Red of Carmel Mizrahi,
the giant winery which produces
more than 60 percent of Israel's
wine, was very pleasant and a
good value.
He also suggested that wine
drinkers who are willing to
drink a non-kosher wine try the
Latrun Winery, located at a
monastery west of Jerusalem.
Although the Latrun wines
used to lag behind the others, he
said, the monks recently
brought in French experts and
worked at improving their prod-
uct. He particularly recom-
mended the Latrun '91 Pinot
Noir.

State revenues in Israel jumped
23.4 percent last month (to
NIS 5.4 billion) compared with
April last year, driven up by high
levels of consumption, imports
and local production, State Rev-

enues Director Yoram Gabbai re-
ported.
Most of the increase is attrib-
utable to the sharp rise in tax re-
ceipts from companies filing 1993
income-tax returns. ❑
