at the Hazel Park Recreation
Center, a couple dozen senior
citizens were listening to
Sylvia Rubach's motivational
speech.
Well, most were paying atten-
tion. A few played cards. Others
seemed to be in their own world.
Two started arguing about a cof-
fee stirring stick, and Ms. Rubach
stopped talking. Once she had
their attention, she firmly asked
them to stop the discussion.

her speech, more determined
than ever to get through to this
group.
Outside, just a few hundred
yards from the room, children
who attend the nearby Roosevelt
Elementary School laughed and
played during a recess from class-
es.
Hearing their voices added a
touch of irony to Ms. Rubach's
talk. One of the points she tried
to make with the senior citizens
was to allow the 4-year-olds with-
in them to surface from the sub-
conscious — the
4-year-olds who
were adventure-
some and creative,
unafraid to take
risks and uncon-
ditional about
love.

line of work in July 1992, four
months after retiring from New
York Life following a 14-year
stint as a training supervisor for
insurance agents.
In 1978, Ms. Rubach became
the company's first female train-
ing supervisor in the nation,
working with agents in the Dear-
born office.
She was a New York Life
agent from 1974-78, the Weight
Watchers Eastern Michigan area
manager from 1972-74 and a
Weight Watchers motivational
leader from 1970-72.
Ms. Rubach was steered to-
ward motivational speaking by
Judy Richman, a job placement
specialist at Jewish Vocational
Service. Ms. Richman asked her
if there was something she would
really love to do in her retirement.
After some soul-searching, Ms.
Rubach discovered the answer.

"Giving motivational talks is
invigorating and exhilarating.
Doing it has changed my life,"
Ms. Rubach said. "How can I mo-
tivate people if I'm not motivat-
ed myself?"
In July, 67-year-old Sylvia
Rubach will go on a six-day, six-
night white water rafting expe-
dition on the Colorado River.
She's been working out for
months in preparation for the
trip.
"We'll be sleeping outside in
tents and, on the last day, we're
going to take a helicopter ride to
