reerism and our drive for educa-
tion are two reasons why we de-
lay childbearing and have lower
fertility rates (two factors impli-
cated as high breast cancer
risks)."
Economic factors typical of
many Jewish women, but not of
Jewish women exclusively, may
also be relevant. Middle-class and
upper-middle-class women are
more likely to take estrogen sup-
plements to relieve some of the
uncomfortable symptoms of
menopause — and high estrogen
levels have been conclusively
linked to greater risk of develop-
ing breast cancer. So have diets
high in fat. The Lilith article asks:
As eating habits change, will
young women be at less risk for
developing breast cancer than
their mothers and grandmothers
were?
"We need to
reexamine the
studies."

However, in addition to these
factors, which a woman can con-
trol, there are others that are en-
vironmental. Studies indicate
that carcinogens are highly cor-
related with the risk of develop-
ing breast cancer.
"Since Jewish women tend to
live in urban areas, is this an-
other confounding variable?"
Lilith asks. "Does our risk 'look'
Jewish, but simply represent a
function of geography?"
Finally, there is the question
of genetics. Many studies have
shown that premenopausal can-
cer tends to run in families, al-
though a predisposition to
contract the disease is not an in-
evitable sentence, but is strong-
ly influenced by lifestyle factors.
"If Jewish women are at high
risk, studies of possible causation
and prevention should be under-
taken immediately," the article
asserts.
"Is it a red herring to say that
being Jewish is a risk factor for
breast cancer?" asks Janet
Wittes, a Washington, D.C., bio-
statistician who chairs the Data
Monitoring Committee for the
Women's Health Initiative at the
National Institutes of Health.
"We need to reexamine the stud-
ies and the data collection — per-
haps via a global study in which
we learn more about ethnicity
and religion." 0
