— headache often is caused by
nighttime teeth grinding, which
results in a sore jaw as well as a
dull ache inside and around the
ear. Other headaches are caused
by tumors, infections or other,
possibly fatal conditions.

"People need
validation that their
headaches are
real."

Ellen Blau

The National Headache Foun-
dation stresses that sufferers
should consult a physician. Over-
the-counter "cures," such as as-
pirin, can worsen one's condition,
the Foundation asserts. The best

treatment frequently comprises
a spectrum of prescriptions —
everything from drugs like
nardil, to diet modification, to a
change in bra type (some bras
put stress on women's shoulders
and neck).
Locally, Ms. Blau is working
with Providence Hospital to es-
tablish the headache support
group, which will teach metro
Detroiters more about the "in-
visible condition." The first meet-
ing will be held May 23, 7:30 to
9 p.m. in the Fisher Auditorium
at Providence. The forum is free
and open to the public.
"A lot of headache sufferers
think they have tried everything,
but they haven't," Ms. Blau said.
"I want people to know that they
don't have to suffer every day of
their lives."

the support group, call 1-800-372-
