Tell Me Why

His Ashes Went Over The River,
But Where Is Einstein's Brain?

1994 J30

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Q: What is a Mizrach?
, A: A Mizrach ("east" in He-

brew) is a plaque placed on the
wall of a synagogue or home to
mark the east, toward
Jerusalem, and the direction one
should face when praying.
The Torah on several occasions
(I Kings 8:34,44,48; II Chronicles
6:34) mentions facing toward the
Temple in Jerusalem during dav-
ening. And Daniel 6:11 tells how
Daniel, while davening, opened
his windows toward Jerusalem.
The Talmud directs Jews in the
Diaspora to turn to Israel for
prayer, and in Israel toward the
Temple — so that all Jews face
the same direction.
• Interestingly, early Christians
and Muslims adopted similar
practices. Though it's no longer
done, Christians once prayed in
' the direction of the Holy Land;
Muslims originally faced
Jerusalem during prayer (Mo-
hammed changed it to Mecca).
For one who does not know the
direction, rabbis recommend he
aim his heart toward Jerusalem
during davening

Q: Whatever happened to Ein-
stein's brain?
A: Born in 1879, Albert Ein-

stein was a physicist, Nobel Prize
winner (for the Theory of Rela-
tivity), Zionist and pacifist.
Einstein died in 1955 and his
body was cremated. His ashes
were scattered in the Delaware
River at Trenton, N.J.
Einstein's brain, however, was
not destroyed. It was dissected
and much of it was donated to
medical science; other parts were
taken by pathologists.
