Annual Gala 6:30 p.m. May 23 at
Adat Shalom Synagogue will fea-
ture a special musical presenta-
tion by Misha Pisman. Mr.
Pisman, a second year cantorial
student, will perform a medley of
Jewish music ranging from He-
brew liturgical to Russian folk
songs. He will be accompanied by
his wife, Olga Bazilevskya.

Michael Bar-Zohar

Michael Bar-Zohar, noted Israeli
writer and former chairman of
the Knesset Committee for Edu-
cation and Cultural Arts, will
speak at the Maimonides Award
Dinner 6 p.m. May 19 at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
The dinner, sponsored by the
Professional Health Services Di-
vision of State of Israel Bonds,
will honor Dr.David J. Chait and
Dr. Mark L. Diem.
Dr. Bar-Zohar is a member of
the Labor Party Central Com-
mittee. He is teaching at Emory
University in Atlanta. He has
written a three-volume biogra-
phy of David Ben-Gurion and his
many works of fiction and non-
fiction have been translated into
several language.

Seminary Concert
At Adat Shalom

The Jewish Genealogical Society
of Michigan will present a panel
discussion on genealogical com-
puter software programs 7 p.m.
May 18 at Temple Beth El.
This forum is geared to both
the beginning and experienced
computer user.
There is no charge for members
and first-time guests. For infor-

The Genealogical Society elec-
tions will be held at the general
meeting. The proposed slate is:

Misha Pisman

Mr. Pisman is enrolled at the
Jewish Theological Seminary's
Cantors Institute and College of
Jewish Music. He is a graduate
of the Ippolitous-Ivanous Music
Academy and the Ginesins Mu-
sic Institute of Moscow.
In the late 1980s, Misha dis-
covered Judaism through his in-
volvement with the Moscow
Choral Synagogue where he
served as a soloist and choir in-
structor.

Memorial Service
Set At Temple

The 11th annual HIV/AIDS Can-
dlelight Memorial Service will be
held May 22, from 7-8:20 p.m. at
Temple Israel. A cooperative ser-
vice of Detroit's interfaith com-
munity, the program is a
memorial to those who have died
with AIDS, and a linking support
to all living with HIV/AIDS, their
families, friends, companions,
and caregivers to our religious
centers and congregations.
The Rev. Jane Adams Spahr
will be the keynote speaker. The
Rev. Spahr was called in 1991 to
co-pastor the Downtown United
Presbyterian Church of
Rochester, N.Y. The Rev. Spahr
also founded the AIDS Interfaith
Marin (AIM) of Marin County,
Calif., and is a member of the
Presbyterian AIDS Network.
Other participants in the ser-
vice will include Rabbi Arnie
Sleutelberg of Congregation Shir
Tikvah, the Rev. Nicholas Hood
