You can't understand biology, sci-
ence, technology... Remember,
even the first Christian countries
were African."
Abraham Foxman, national
director of the Anti-Defamation
League, does not buy Dr. Jeffries'
statements. "He is anti-Semitic,
to put it mildly," Mr. Foxman told
a national black publication in
February. "His speeches have no
basis of fact. These are the rant-
ings of someone who is bigoted,
prejudiced and anti-Semitic."
But the director of the Detroit
Public Schools' Professional
Development Academy this week
defended her invitation to Dr.
Jeffries to teach a conference on
African-centered education.
Dr. Kay Lovelace of the Detroit
Public Schools described Dr.
Jeffries as "a gifted scholar and
expert on African-centered edu-
cation," the topic of the
Professional Development
Academy's indaba — a Zulu
word for intensive study confer-
ence.
Dr. Jeffries led the conference
Thursday and will return June
9.
Dr. Lovelace declined to dis-
close the travel costs and hono-
rarium for Dr. Jeffries, which is
paid by the Detroit Public
Schools.
She said 60-70 teachers, ad-
ministrators, parents and com-
munity members attend the
monthly indaba, which started
last year.
"If he were
anti-Semitic, why
did a jury award him
$360,000?"
— Dr. Kay Lovelace
Dr. Jeffries has been labeled a
racist for controversial state-
ments he made in the 1980s and
`90s about Jews and whites in
general. He was fired in 1991 by
City College of New York from
his position as chairman of black
studies, then reinstated by a fed-
eral court.
Last month, a federal appeals
court reaffirmed his right to keep
his job, but struck down a jury's
award of $360,000 in punitive
damages.
The same day, he was quoted
in a Howard University speech
as saying that 100-200 million
blacks died in the "African
Holocaust," and white Europeans
— "Jews and gentiles, Catholics
and Protestants" — profited from
the slave trade's "death and de-
struction."
