Martin Fern, 93, former Detroiter
of Washington, D.C., died April
21. In the early 1920s, to suple-
ment his income, he began sell-
ing newspapers. The business
prospered and became the basis
for the Highland Park News

years under his guidance, and fi-
nally was transformed into the
Ferndale bookshop, Paperbacks

Mr. Fern began teaching in the
Detroit Public Schools in 1924,
spending most of his career at
Sherrard Intermediate School,
teaching mathematics and Eng-
lish. He worked in the theater
and in educational radio broad-
casting, did graduate work at the
University of Michigan, was an
early active participant in the De-
troit Federation of Teachers. In
the early 1960s he retired from

considerably expanded its scope.
He sold the bookstore in 1978.

gram was devoted to tales of Jew-
ish history and dramatized the
lives of Jewish sages and histor-
ical figures.
The program attracted a loyal
following by educating listeners
about Jewish history and religion.
His serial dramatizations of
events in the lives of the Rambam
(Maimonides), Rashi (Rabbi Shlo-
mo Ben Yitzchak), the Maharal
of Prague, and others, were avid-
ly followed. He also drew upon
ancient sources in the Talmud
