this week declined to rule out any
possible study outcome.
When asked during an inter-
national conference call hookup
with reporters whether a CJF-
UJA merger was being looked at,
he replied:
"There has been no decision
yes or no...(there is no predeter-
mination)...I won't predict the
outcome...but I won't rule out
anything."
Speaking during the same
hookup, Marvin Lender of New
Haven, Conn., the UJA presi-
dent, said, "We feel good about
the study and we feel a lot of good
things can come from it. What we
stand for at UJA is really not any
different from what CJF stands
for."
The study — officially titled
"Study of the National Structure"
--- will be led by a group of 28
prominent national communal
leaders, both lay and profession-
al. Co-chairmen are Chicago's
Charles H. Goodman, a former
CJF president, and Detroit's Joel
D. Tauber, UJA's national cam-
paign chairman.
An independent consultant not
yet named also will work with the
group.
Also on the committee are
Shoshana S. Cardin of Baltimore,
who has vast experience in Jew-
ish communal organizational life,
and Richard L. Pearlstone, a Bal-
timore native who next month
takes over as UJA national cam-
paign chairman.
The panel's first meeting is
tentatively set for mid-May.
Mr. Wishner, citing the inclu-
sion of UCLA professor Steven L.
Spiegel and the mix of small and
large city federation representa-
tives on the committee, said the
group will solicit a wide variety
of views before issuing its re-
port.
