The eight federations were At-
lanta, Chicago, Cleveland, San
Francisco, New York Boston, Los
Angeles and Washington, D.C.
In a second letter, federation lead-
ers in three additional regions —
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and cen-
tral New Jersey's Metro West dis-
trict — joined the original eight.
Darrell D. Friedman, president
of The Associated: Jewish Com-
munity Federation of Baltimore,
said the local group also backed
the call for a study.
"From time to time, move-
ments need to review their struc-
ture," he said.
The study comes at a time of
increased concern about
sending so many millions of
dollars overseas when many
American Jewish leaders are
saying the money is needed
at home for Jewish education
and other concerted efforts to
stem rising assimilation.
As Rabbi Brian Lurie,
UJA's executive vice presi-
dent, noted, that increased
concern is indicative of a shift
in sentiment away from "the
survival of Israel to the sur-
vival of Judaism itself," a sit-
uation brought on by the
"worldwide Jewish continu-
ity problem" and a growing
sense that Israel's continued
existence, while certainly not
problem-free, is generally as-
sured. It is, Rabbi Lurie said,
"a profound change."
Announcement of the
study has given rise to spec-
ulation that CJF, an um-
