President's Column by Eli A. 5cherr

T

he Jewish National Fund takes great pleasure in congratulating Edythe Jackier Mulivor on
her being named this year's recipient of the JNF Keter Shem Tov - Crown of Good Name
Award. On Tuesday, June 21, 1994, Edythe Jackier Mulivor will be honored with a testimoni-
al dinner at Congregation Shaarey Zedek at which she will be presented with the award.
The Detroit Community is well aware of Edythe's involvement with and contribution to Jewish
Charities over the years. She has been one of a handful of people whose name is recognized by virtually the entire Detroit
Jewish community for her leadership and devotion to Jewish organizations. This is our opportunity to express our thanks
to this outstanding Jewish leader.
The dinner will culminate this year's Operation Promised Land Campaign. Funds raised will be allocated to JNF's ur-
gently needed water reservoir development program. As I have noted in previous columns, not only are Israel's domestic
needs great, it.is the opinion of many experts that the issue of peace in the Middle East will ultimately be decided over the
availability of water.
JNF and the'State of Israel have geared up for a three-pronged program to expand water availability nationwide. Plans
call for purifying and recycling an additional 100 million cubic meters of sewage water for agriculture, desalinating anoth-,..
er 100 million cubic meters of brackish water, and constructing a new system of dams and water reservoirs to capture at •
least 100 million cubic meters of floodwater. The first 14 of these facilities have been completed. They have proved their
ability to make a major difference in solving the potential water crisis. JNF has developed proven techniques which will be
of great help to the economy and life of Israel's people and has also developed technology which is exportable interna-
tionally.
June 21, 1994 provides us each with the opportunity to achieve two positive results with one act. Your attendance and fi-
nancial support at the Edythe Jackier Mulivor dinner will honor a most worthy honoree and will support the vital work of
the Jewish National Fund.
Our JNF staff will be happy to provide more complete details if you will please call (810) 557-6644 during normal busi-
ness hours.
