The Bank of Israel's "S," or
state of the economy indicator,
jumped 1.9 percent in March,
reflecting the significant ex-
pansion of economic activity in
the first quarter.
The preliminary figure fol-

lows increases of 0.8 percent in
February and 1.1 percent in
January. During the first quar-
ter of the year, the index rose
3.8 percent compared with 2.2
percent in the previous quar-
ter.

The U.S. dollar broke through
the MS 3 mark last week, sig-
naling the Bank of Israel's in-
tention to let the shekel devalue
after holding its value steady
since the beginning of the year.
Since the beginning of the year,
the dollar has several times
come a few thousandths of a
point short of breaching the

NIS 3 mark.
What may have tipped the bal-
ance at the central bank this
time is the realization that
keeping the exchange rate
frozen did not help keep infla-
tion down, said Jonathan Katz,
head of Economic Modeling and
Forecasting.

More Traffic At The Airport

The number of charter passen-
gers to and from Israel's Ben-
Gurion Airport during March
rose 82 percent to 83,000 from
45,000 over the same time last
year, according to statistics pro-

The statistics are particu-

recent decision to liberalize air-

greater freedom to charter

Last Call For Bottle Dispute?

The Scotch Whisky Association,
which represents most of Scot-
land's whisky manufacturers,
petitioned the High Court of
Justice in Israel to reverse a
lower-court order which re-
turns 1,600 whisky bottles to
an Israeli company.
The company, Nebo Agen-
cies Ltd., manufactures alco-
holic beverages whose label
contains the word "Scotch" and
a picture of a bagpipe player.
The association sued the

company in Tel Aviv Magis-
trates Court, claiming the la-
bel was misleading because the
beverage was neither real
whisky nor made in Scotland.
The court issued a search-
and-seizure order. As a result,
1,600 bottles were. confiscated
from the company. However,
the court later acquitted the
company of any wrongdoing
and ordered the bottles re-
turned.
