Israel, PLO
At Model U.N.
/j
N
New York (JTA) — An
Israeli Consulate official and
a Palestinian representative
recently met for a dialogue
in front of more than 1,500
college students at the open-
ing ceremonies of the Na-
tional Model United
Nations.
The meeting attracted the
largest gathering to witness
an encounter between an
Israeli and Palestinian offi-
cial since the historic hand-
shake between Israeli Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin and
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization Yassir Arafat on the
White House lawn last
September.
Ephraim Ben Matityahu,
Israeli consul for academic
affairs, and Muin Shreim,
counselor at the Observer
Mission of the PLO to the
United Nations, fielded
questions for more than an
hour as they reaffirmed
their commitment to the
peace process.
The National Model
United Nations, an annual
conference of college
students from the United
States and abroad, held the
meeting in New York on
March 29.
Mr. Ben Matityahu took
the podium first, and con-
gratulated the students for
being interested in events
which might initially seem
remote and far-off.
Israel's commitment to the
peace talks was a constant
theme of Mr. Ben
Matityahu's speech.
He spoke of the recent 15th
anniversary celebration of
the signing of Israel's
historic peace treaty with
Egypt as a "turning point in
Israel's relations with the
Arab countries." But he said
that as far as the rest of the
Arab world was concerned,
there was still much to be
accomplished.
Mr. Shreim took a more
combative stand. He began
his remarks by noting the
PLO's disenchantment with
the peace talks after Feb. 25,
when an Israeli settler
gunned down at least 29 Pa-
lestinians at a Hebron
mosque.
He called the incident a
"result of the Israeli occupa-
tion" and said that the
massacre proved the need for
an international presence in
the territories.
He reiterated the PLO's
demands for Israel to remove
the settlers from the ter-
ritories, saying that the set-
tlements are "hot spots of
extremism." ❑
