n

write a history of Sinai. It was in
the early 1990s, during dark fis-
\ cal times at Sinai.
"I was sitting down in the din-
ing room in the hospital and talk-
ing to some doctors down there.
I brought up the name of Harry.
Saltzstein and people said, 'Har-
ry who?'
"I thought to myself, 'These
guys don't know where they came
from. They think this place was
just suddenly built.' So I went
back and got the records of Sinai.
I went around and interviewed
the remaining original staff with
dictaphones. I've got all of their
stories — stories of men who are
no longer around.
"I wanted to sum up the story
of Sinai, how it got started. It was
blood, sweat and tears.
"The people who built Sinai
had two ideals. One, they were
successful businessmen who felt
they had an obligation to the com-
munity. The other was, they felt
Jewish doctors had been really
mistreated. They wanted to pro-
vide a place for them to work.

"It was important to
put facts on paper."

— Dr. Herbert Bloom

"Along the way, they con-
fronted every challenge. Finan-
cial. They had to raise the money.
Then, there were religious con-
flicts. Some people wanted a
N kosher kitchen. Others didn't.
2 "There were a couple of promi-
nent Jewish doctors, holding
good positions at other hospitals,
who objected to Sinai. They said
we weren't ready for it, that we
didn't have enough good Jewish
doctors.
"I personally think they didn't
want any competition. The com-
munity did have good, well-ed-
ucated Jewish doctors. They just
had no opportunity for real ad-
vancement before Sinai."
Today, Dr. Bloom lives with his
wife, Oakland County Circuit
Court Judge Alice Gilbert, whom
he married after Betty died of
cancer. He has seven grandchil-
dren and two great-grandchil-
dren. Professionally, he counsels
at Sinai and serves on the facul-
,) ty at Wayne State University's
/i
medical school.
Dr. Bloom isn't sure how his
archival work will come in handy,
though he expects it will, some-
day.
\
"I don't know if it'll mean any-
) thing to people," he says. "But I
still feel that it was important to
put some of the facts down on pa-
per. People gave of themselves
and their money to build a hos-
pital to which the community can
look with pride. The Jews of to-
day have an obligation to support
that." ❑
