phase was added by the city
when state funding became avail-
able.
The Michigan Department of
Natural Resources has provided
a $100,000 grant for the project.
Fund raising by the Burton Com-
munity Park Committee, which
generated $70,000, and match-
ing money from the city raised
the total to $240,000.
Another $30,000 grant from
the DNR is paying for the trees.
The project started two years
ago. Ms. Levinson and Ms.
Schwartz found themselves with
a little extra time on their hands
when their children began
kindergarten.
"We were looking for some-
thing to sink our teeth into," Ms.
Levinson said, and the two
women decided their hometown
needed a modern playground for
its children.
The idea for the Leathers and
Associates playground came from
Ms. Levinson, who had seen one
and acquired information about
it during a trip to Dayton, Ohio.
Getting the preliminary work
done on the Huntington Woods
project was a long process. Fi-
nally, the Burton Community
Park Committee was able to
start recruiting volunteers early
this year. So far, about 1,200 of
the 2,000 volunteer shifts have
been filled.
Persons interested in joining
the crew are asked to call the
Burton Community Park hotline
at 548-4176. D
