Huntington Woods women organize construction of a new community playground. STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER I f you build, they will come. Cindy Schwartz and Elise Levinson are sure of it. That's why the longtime Huntington Woods residents and friends are - spearheading the city-wide effort to build the Burton Community Park playground next to Burton Elementary School. From May 11-15, hundreds of residents, former residents and friends will put down their legal briefs, scalpels, lecture notes and laptops and pick up hammers, rakes, sanders and power saws. Child care will be available and three meals a day will be served. Construction will begin at 7:30 a.m. each day and last un- til 8:30 p.m. Tools will be provided by the city, residents and local busi- nesses. Most of the materials also have been donated. When the more than 2,000 work shifts, some up to four hours, have been completed, Huntington Woods will be the proud owner of a new 14,000- square-foot playground. "It's going to be a party at- mosphere for five days," says Ms. Schwartz, 43, who is co-chair- woman of the Burton Commu- nity Park Committee along with Ms. Levinson, 42. "Even if it rains, we'll be out there building," Mst Schwartz added. "It's going to be like a barn-raising. I don't think any- thing like this has happened in Huntington Woods since our community pool was built in the early 1960s. "Everyone has gotten behind the project. Our city officials and the Berkley School District have been fabulous." The Ithaca, N.Y., architectur- al firm of Robert S. The playground replaces a pre- vious play area which was re- moved to make way for the new equipment. It will include a play structure, swings, game/picnic "It's going to be like a barn-raising." — Cindy Schwarlz tables, benches, a tot-lot and an outdoor classroom. It will be ac- cessible to the handicapped through ramps, special surfaces and handrails. A new recycled wood/plastic product from Mobil called Trex will be used for handrails and deck areas. "The residents in our commu- nity were concerned about child safety, not harming the environ- ment, and making the play- ground intergenerational and accessible to the handicapped," Ms. Levinson said. "We feel we've addressed all those needs." The playground and accom- panying drainage work, which already has been completed by a contractor hired by the city, make up Phase I of the Burton Com- munity Park project. Phase II, scheduled to be com- pleted around Sept. 1, includes improvements in nearby base- ball and soccer fields, a quarter- mile jogging track and the planting of several trees.
