law. I think it's wonderful.”
Mark Jacobs, 24, agrees. The
Project STaR social-work intern
congratulated Dr. Kevorkian on
his efforts to legalize medicide.
"It's important that we are
able to retain our rights and priv-
ileges," Mr. Jacobs said. "I think
we need to protect people's right
to exercise their own religious
and personal convictions, and I
wouldn't want the state to pre-
vent me, as a Jewish person,
/-3 from following any of my own,
•deeply held beliefs."
Dr. Kevorkian said, in the
course of his controversial career,
he hasn't encountered much op-
position from Jewish people. "At
least not that I'm aware of," he
said. "Most opposition comes
. from fanatic Christian sects."
Zelma Sussman of Farming-
ton Hills did not sign the peti-
tion.
"I'm a little apprehensive," she
said. "Someone might take con-
trol in the future. Eventually,
someone in power may decide to
do away with somebody. You
never know."
Karen Jacobs is a registered
nurse who witnesses death on
a daily basis. She signed the pe-
tition, but harbors mixed feelings
about Dr. Kevorkian.
"I think the issue should be
placed on the ballot," she said.
"But I think we need more edu-
cated, responsible physicians
making the decisions. We need
more guidelines and structure. I
think Dr. Kevorkian did not al-
ways make wise choices of can-
didates (for medicide)."
On voting days, Michigan law
allows petitioners, politicians and
other individuals to publicize
their causes — so long as they
stand at least 100 feet away from
the entrance of the polling area.
If the polls are located on private
property, owners and managers
can ask petitioners and others to
leave or disband their activities.
Morton Plotnick, executive di-
rector of the JCCenter, said he
was not aware of Dr. Kevorkian's
presence.
"We.didn't know about it, pe-
riod," he said. "There are a lot of
people on our property all the
time. Come election day, it's
amazing the number of people
who show up. We traditionally
have not done anything." ❑

Have You Heard?
by Felix Cruz
Hearing Aid Specialist
TESTING . . 1, 2
Because infants cannot raise their hands
in response to the sounds emitted during a
standard hearing test, alternatives have been
developed to test their hearing. The reliable
screening method known as the auditory
brain-stem response (ABR) involves the at-
tachment of electrodes to the head of a rest-
ing or sleeping child. When the child hears
sounds through earphones, the electrodes
record the electrical activity from his or her
auditory nerve. On the other hand, a newer
procedure known as otoacoustic emissions
(OAF) screening makes use of the recent dis-
covery that a healthy cochlea (in the inner
ear) emits spontaneous low-level inaudible
sounds. By introducing a sound source into
a child's ear canal, otoacoustic emissions in
the ear can be prompted and measured.
The sooner a hearing problem is di-
agnosed, the better. If you suspect that you
may have incurred hearing loss, visa us at
LUCAS-CRUZ HEARING AID SERVICE for
a comprehensive hearing test. We provide
and service many makes and models of
hearing instruments in order to be sure to
have the one that's right for your unique
needs. We also provide a wide range of ac-
cessories, like batteries, battery testers,
Dri-aid kits, ear mold cleaners and more.
We are conveniently located at 18899 W.
12 Mile Rd. in Lathrup Village (424-8450).
We also make house calls. Remember,
May is Better Hearing Month!
P.S. Because of an ABR screening's rel-
atively high cost, it is usually recommended
only for high-risk infants.
