Vladimir Zhirinovsky talks with an Orthodox Jew in Strasbourg.

Zhirinovsky Denies
Jewish Background

Moscow (JTA) — Back on
Russian soil after a raucous
trip to France, ultrana-
tionalist Vladimir Zhirinov-
sky denounced reports that
he is half-Jewish at a rambl-
ing news conference here.
He spurned documents
discovered by the Associated
Press in his birthplace,
Almaty, Kazakhstan,
describing them as a
"forgery" and a
"fabrication."
Public records published
by the AP show that Mr.
Zhirinovsky's • mother mar-
ried a Jewish man named
Volf Eidelshtein and that
her son used the name
Eidelshtein until he changed
it to Zhirinovsky when he
was 18.
According to local news
reports, Mr. Zhirinovsky's
April 15 news conference
was filled with anti-Semitic
remarks and condemnations
of "Zionists."
Last week, while Mr.
Zhirinovsky was on a visit to
the French city of
Strasbourg to address the
Council of Europe, he lost
his temper when about 100
Jewish students demon-
strated against him in front
of the Russian Consulate
there.
Television cameras show-
ed him grabbing small
bushes from the consulate's
garden and throwing them
at the demonstrators. He re-
portedly also spat at the
demonstrators and
threatened to use a "nuclear
gun" against them, though
he did not make clear exact-
ly what he had in mind.
Referring to that incident
during the news conference;
Mr. Zhirinovsky said sar-
castically, "A group of Jews
in Strasbourg can attack any

deputy of the Russian
Parliament. That's possible,
that's democracy. Full
freedom for Jews in
Strasbourg — and Russian
diplomats and deputies have
to keep silent."
Mr. Zhirinovsky also lash-
ed out at the possibility that
Russia would agree to an as-
sociate membership in
NATO under the Partner-
ship for Peace program.
At the news conference,
Mr. Zhirinovsky referred to
that program as a "vile
document."
He also said that Russia
should not join the Council
of Europe — whose members
include 32 nations from
Western, Central and East-
ern Europe — because it is a
"pro-NATO, pro-Zionist, pro-
American organization." 0

New Leader
Worries Jews

Rome (JTA) — Irene Pivetti,
the newly elected speaker of
the lower house of the
Italian Parliament, denies
that she is anti-Semitic; but,
nonetheless, contends that
Jews are racist.
She is a slight, pale and
delicate-looking woman who
likes to dress in pastel
colors, but her appearance is
deceiving.
She is known as "la
papessa (the popess)" and
"la pasionaria" for her
vehement views on
Catholicism and fiery
oratory in defense of her par-
ty, the separatist Northern
League, and its leader,
Umberto Bossi.
"Your soul to God; your
vote to Bossi," was her cam-
paign slog-an in the March
