independent bookseller himself,
hopes Ms. Keramedjian is cor-
rect.
The growth of chains "would
almost suggest that the market
is infinite," he says. But, he con-
tinues, others argue that the
market is saturated, and that su-
perstores can only push the in-
dependents out of business.
"The truth is probably some-
where in between," he concludes.
Ms. Keramedjian says stores
like hers wouldn't be as success-
ful as they are if it weren't for
places like Bookpeople and Book
Beat. "A lot of what we model
ourselves after is the best of the
independents," she says.
Ms. Sapp says Borders doesn't
see itself as a traditional chain.
"We are a collection of fine book-
stores," not a chain of cookie-cut-
ter superstore outlets, she says.
But some independents argue
that the chains will end up hurt-
ing the stores they set out to em-
ulate. They suggest that the
explosion of chain stores will not
only push out smaller operations,
but will damage the publishing
industry overall.
"Some books that would have
been published won't be," con-
tends Mr. Loren. He points to
what is called the "midlist,"
books by less well-known au-
thors from smaller publishing
companies which are often dis-
covered and promoted by the vo-
racious readers that staff many
bookstores.
"If the independent bookstores
disappear, there won't be anyone
to sell the midlist books," says
Ms. Winkelman. "Only well-
known authors will sell."
Ms. Sapp, who once consid-
ered opening a bookstore herself,
disagrees that the publishing in-
dustry is at risk.
"I can see (the independents')
concern, but we carry more small
presses than anyone. We have
career booksellers here," she
says, insisting that her staff
reads just as much as the sales-
people at independent stores.
Mr. Robinson believes as long
as booksellers are also book
lovers, the industry will remain
strong. The chains appear to em-
ploy knowledgeable staff, he
says, but "how much of that type
of talent is out there across the
country?"
"I hope the chains are right,"
he continues. If there's a much
bigger market than originally an-
ticipated — one that can accom-
modate chain stores and
independents alike — "we can all
sell more books." ❑
