U-M Museum
Mounts Exhibits

On extended loan from the Met-
ropolitan Museum of New York,
the painting Gardanne, by Paul
Cezanne, will be on view on the
main floor of the University of
Michigan Museum of Art
through December 31.
Gardanne depicts a hilltop
village near Aix-en-Provence.
Cezanne portrayed this land-
scape three times between 1885
and 1886. Cezanne's geometri-
cizing rendition of the craggy
site influenced artists such as
Degas and Picasso.
Currently on view in the
20th-Century Gallery at the
University of Michigan Muse-
urn of Art is an installation of
28 works of 20th-century art fo-
cusing on abstraction through
mid-May. The exhibition pre-
sents a selection of paintings
and sculpture from the Muse-
um's permanent collection that
reveals the strength of the
UMMA's holdings in abstract
art. Rather than attempt a com-
prehensive survey of the role of
20th-century formalism, the ex-
hibition, titled "Driven to Ab-
straction: Art of the Twentieth
Century," aims to give a sense
of the diversity of abstract styles
that have emerged since 1900.

Architectural
Drawings Shown

Architectural drawings from
around the world will be on
view at Center Galleries
through June 3. The drawings,
ranging from skyscrapers to
bridges to private residences,
have been selected from archi-
tectural illustrators active in
the United States, Japan, Aus-
tralia, Canada, and other coun-
tries.
The exhibition, titled "Archi-
tecture In Perspective," was
organized by the American
Society of Architectural Per-
spectivists, an international or-
ganization of architectural
illustrators who work in a wide
variety of styles and media.
Many of these renderings are
executed in a highly finished
manner, while others are drawn
in an informal, sketch-like form.
The 50 drawings in the show,
rendered in watercolor, pencil,
charcoal, or other media, rep-
resent often dramatic views of
structures that may or may not
be built in the future.
The Center Galleries are at
Woodward and Kirby in the
Park Shelton Building. Admis-
sion to the gallery is free.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-Sat-
urday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
