volunteers are coming in. It's a
very fast-paced situation, but I
enjoy it."
Last year's auction raised
more than $500,000, approxi-
mately 3 percent of the WTVS
operating budget.
Ms. Friedman has made a
commitment to the public tele-
vision station through June.
Her first stay began innocent-
ly and ended up being a 16-year
association.
"I started working with the
auction in 1969 when a friend
asked if I would help her out,"
said Ms. Friedman.
"I couldn't spend a lot of time

with her, but I worked hard and
enjoyed it. A few years later, I
was asked to be the auction
manager. I even was flown to
Chicago to see how public tele-
vision auctions are done there."
Ms. Friedman says she
stopped being manager in 1978
because she "wanted to move
on." She was put in charge of
corporate underwriting and cor-
porate development at WTVS
before leaving to be director of
fund development at Sinai Hos-
pital.
After a stint at Sinai and an-
other one as director of mar-
keting for Janotta Bray &
Associates, a job placement
firm, Ms. Friedman went to Va-
riety but left to become a pri-
vate consultant. About a year
later, she was asked to be Va-
riety's executive director.
A 1956 University of Michi-
gan graduate, Ms. Friedman is
a member of the board of direc-
tors of Jewish Vocational Ser-
vice.
The native of Larchmont,
N.Y., and her husband, Irving,
a dentist, have been married for
33 years. The Friedmans have
lived in West Bloomfield for 30
years. They have a daughter,
Donna, and a son, Marc. ❑
