o,sing your job doesn't have
to feel like the end of the
world. It can be the begin-
ning of a new and won-
derful adventure.
That's the opinion of Jerry
Bricker, vice president and con-
sultant in the Troy office of
Drake Beam Morin Inc. (DBM),
the largest organizational and
individual transition consult-
ing firm in the world.
Mr. Bricker will speak on
"Being Secure in an Insecure
Job Market" at 8:30 p.m. April
25 at the Birmingham Temple
as part of the temple's Monday
Forum lecture series.
He's a member of the temple
and one of the founders of its
Gathering of Men support
group.
"Being out of work can be the
ideal opportunity to explore
fields which are more mean-
ingful to you," said Mr. Brick-
er. "It's important that you keep
this kind of a positive attitude
because that's crucial in your
recovery.
"There's a tendency to get on
an emotional roller coaster af-
ter you've been let go from your
job and that can get in the way
of your real objective, which is
to assess your talents and move
forward."
Those who are looking for
work should recognize that the
job market these days is "cus-
tomer-driven," Mr. Bricker said.
"Networking
is ' vital, of
course, and so
are your sup-
port systems,
but there's an
even more im-
portant bottom-
line principle:
You have to
convince a
prospective em-
ployer that he
or she has a
problem, and
you have the
skills to solve it.
"That's why
we advise our
clients to make
their resume fo-
cus on their accomplishments.
They should include the prob-
lem or opportunity for achieve-
ment they faced, the action they
took and the results."
Those who are working
should assume that job secu-
rity is a thing of the past, Mr.
Bricker said, and "you should
consider yourself self-employed,
selling your services project by
project. Because of that, it's im-
portant to keep your skills cur-
rent and always assess your
level of expertise in your field.
"It's also good to join profes-
sional organizations and update
your resume at least once a
year to add your latest accom-
plishments."

Stable Capital Market Needed
Mr. Bricker, an Ann Arbor
resident, was a bank executive
from 1961-86 until he entered
his new field by launching his
own company, Bricker Associ-
ates.
He did contract work for
DBM for a year before joining
the firm in January. DBM has
146 offices worldwide.
After earning a bachelor's de-
gree in economics from the City
University of New York in 1961,
Mr. Bricker received a master's
in human resource development
