AMERICAN
CR

Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu's elderberry syrup reduces flu symptoms.

he Influenza B virus — a
potential killer of the el-
derly and chronically ill
— has met its match in
the black elderberry plant
(Sambucus nigra), according to
Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, an
immunologist at the Hebrew
University-Hadassah School of
Public Health and Social Med-
icine in Israel.
Dr. Mumcuoglu (pronounced
Mum-shu-glu) has developed
an elderberry syrup that she
markets under the same "Sam-
bucol" in pharmacies and
health-food stores in Israel and
abroad. It is not registered as
a drug, but she will apply for
this status now that research
appears to confirm its effec-
tiveness.
Double-blind tests on Sam-
bucol conducted on flu suffer-
ers at Hebrew University
Medical School and its School
of Public Health and Commu-
nity Medicine, as well as at two
other hospitals in Israel,
showed that 20 percent of the
patients who took four table-
spoons of Sambucol daily had
significant improvement in

T

their symptoms (fever, cough,
muscle pain) after one day; an
additional 73 percent improved
after two days; and nearly 90
percent were completely cured
in three days. No side effects
were indicated.
In a control group that did
not take the syrup, only 16 per-
cent improved after two days.

The flu may
have met
its match.

It took six days for most of the

group to get over the flu.
Aside from a preventive anti-
flu vaccine (which may not be
taken by people allergic to egg
whites), there are only two anti-
flu medications, amantadine
and rimantadine. These drugs,
given after exposure to the
virus, are expensive and have
shown side effects, especially
in the elderly, Dr. Mumcuoglu
says. ❑
