Congregation Beth Achim will
culminate the year-long 25th
anniversary celebration at 7
p.m. May 22 with An Evening
of Elegance.Featured will be en-
tertainer Paul Zion and his Sim-
cha Klezmer Band in concert
followed by a champagne after-
glow.
Prior to the concert there will
be a brief ceremony in which
the past presidents of the con-
gregation will be honored for
their service.

Chairs Named
For Israel Day

Linda Lee and Jerald Kaufman
have been appointed chairper-
sons of the annual Walk for Is-
rael at 12:30 p.m. May 1.
Registration starts at 11:30 a.m.
Ms. Lee, a past president of
Jewish Community Center, is
a member of the Jewish Feder-
ation's Community Outreach
and Involvement Steering Com-
mittee, the Women' Division
board and the National Agen-
cies Division.
Past chairman of the Allied
Jewish Campaign's Metropoli-
tan Division, Mr. Kaufman has
been active in the community-
wide effort for many years and
participated in Federation's
Hadracha program in 1981. He
is a longtime member of the
Jewish Community Center's
board of directors.
One night before the Walk,
April 30, Israel's Noa (Achinoam
Nini) and Gil Dor will officially
begin the celebration with a con-
cert at the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center. Doors open
at 9:15 p.m.
Born in Tel Aviv and of
Yemenite descent, Ms. Nini
comes from a Yemenite-Israeli
background, but lived in New
York from the time she was 6
months old until she was 17.
Noa is bilingual and is as com-
fortable singing jazz standards
as she is Yemenite folk songs.
She trained in dance at the
Alvin Ailey and Martha Gra-
ham Dance Centers, and incor-
porates dance into her shows.
Mr. Dor studied at Boston
Berklee School of Music. He lat-
er toured Europe with Al DiMe-
ola before he do-founded Tel
Aviv's Rimon School. Mr. Dor,
made the connection between
jazz star Pat Metheny and Nini.
On May 1, the 3.5-mile Walk
kicks off a fun-filled day of ac-
tivities centering around Israel's
anniversary at the JCC. Cele-
brate Israel Festivities will fea-
ture Israeli food, art and music.
Programs for people of all ages

will include a technology fair
and a video presentation of the
Israel independence celebration
in Yavne, Detroit's sister city in
Israel.
Lunch and snacks will be
available at an Israeli food
court, which will be open all af-
ternoon, in Shiffman Hall and
the cafeteria.
All families are invited to
participate in the Israel Inde-
pendence Youth and Family In-
door Games for chidlren age
2-15, who must be accompanied
by an adult.
A cantorial concert at Tem-
ple Israel will round out the pro-
gram.
Free bus transportation will
be available from the JCC, Jim-
my Prentis Morris building at
10 a.m., Highland Towers at
10:10 a.m. and the Agency for
Jewish Education (UHS) build-
ing at 10:30 a.m., returning
throughout the afternoon.

Greenberg

Blu Greenberg, lecturer and au-
thor of numerous books and ar-
ticles on Jewish women and the
Jewish family, will describe her
odyssey Tom Mild Mannered
Yeshiva Girl to Orthodox Fem-
inist" at Adat Shalom Synag-
gogue Sisterhood's annual
Donor Day May 3.
Blu Greenberg is an Ortho-
dox Jewish feminist who has
dealt extensively with women's
roles in Orthodoxy. She has
been active in Jewish-Palestin-
ian dialogue and other inter-
group relations fro the past two
decades. She is the author of On
Women and Judaism: A view
from Tradition, How to Run a
Traditional Jewish Household,
and A Special Kind of Mother.
The day will begin at 10 a.m.
with coffee and an array of bou-
tiques.
Proceeds will help to support
the sisterhood's programs.
There is a charge.
