PHYSICIAN REFERRAL SERVICE
Joint Replacement
Makes Climbing Stairs
a Reality
Sinai's Chief of Orthopedic Surgery Richard Krugel, M.D., performs
orthopedic surgery.
P
auline Brown regrets
1 she waited a year to
have her knees replaced
with prosthetic devices. A
victim of rheumatoid
arthritis, she hoped the
pain would just go away
by itself.
But it got worse. So
when her physician pre-
dicted she would only feel
soreness for two weeks af-
ter surgery, Brown fig-
ured that was a pretty
good deal.
sinar*ig Mire:
At 60, Mrs. Brown had
the surgery on both knees
with one procedure.
"It was a miracle!" she
recalls. "Three days after
the operation, I walked 60
feet with the aid of a walk-
er. A month after that, I
was using a cane and go-
ing up and down stairs.
And all the pain was
gone."
That was two-and-a-
half years ago. Today, she
walks anywhere she wish-
1 - 8 0 0 - 2 4 8 - 3 6 2 7
es without a walking aid
or the slightest hint of
knee pain.
Sinai Hospital's Sec-
tion Chief of Orthopedic
Surgery Richard Krugel,
M.D., performed the
surgery. Mrs. Brown is
one of a chorus of severe
rheumatoid arthritic pa-
tients who have benefit-
ted from his hip and knee
replacements.
The surgery has a 95
percent success rate, says
Dr. Krugel. Thanks to hip
and knee replacement
surgery, "many more pa-
tients are living fuller,
pain-free lives."
Dr. Krugel attributes
this success rate to major
improvements in pros-
thetic materials and de-
sign, precise surgical
instrumentation, and an
inpatient rehabilitation
unit whose motto is, 'This
is no place to rest!"
Dr. Krugel also credits
aggressive home and out-
patient therapy programs
with helping patients to
get back on their feet.
"We're all in this to-
gether," says Dr. Krugel.
"I provide medical exper-
tise, our rehabilitation
people provide the en-
couragement and follow-
up treatment and our
patients provide the desire
to improve their quality of
life."
And Mrs. Brown
couldn't agree more.
