1:Chaimpalooza:
A Noisy Success
ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR
WHO: Jonathan Knoll
SCHOOL:
Groves
Birmingham
PROUD OF: With plenty of
help from his AZA chapter, Jon
chaired the March 19 rock band
festival at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center.
L'Chaim AZA grossed $1,800 at
the event, plus two large box-
es of canned goods for Yad Ezra
kosher food bank.
HOW: L'Chaimpalooza began
as a chapter joke two years ago
and started evolving into reali-
ty last summer. "L'Chaim Pres-
ident Jonathan Blavin thought
we hadn't been doing much as
a chapter, and we wanted to
turn things around," Jonathan
Knoll said.
Knoll was the most vocal
about doing a Lollapalooza-type
concert and was appointed
chairman of the event in Sep-
tember. With the help of co-
chairs Brian Selfon, Mike
Gluckman, Blavin and 15 oth-
er chapter members, L'Chaim
arranged for eight rock bands,
sponsors, security guards, re-
freshments and nine or 10 in-
formation tables staffed by
groups as diverse as the Young
Republicans, United Marijua-
na Smokers and Students
Against Drunk Driving.
The event drew 340 teen-
agers who paid $5 apiece to see
the bands.
Jonathan Knoll
"It was the first time since
1982 that L'Chaim has done a
BBYO region-wide event,"
Knoll said, "and it's the first
time we've had this much mon-
ey."
POSTSCRIPT: At their next
meeting, L'Chaim members will
decide how much of the pro-
ceeds to donate to charity as
well as to the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization International Ser-
vice Fund.
Knoll, who is chapter mem-
bership vice president, expects
the event to help L'Chaim boost
its roster to 35 by the end of the
school year. The chapter also
plans to repeat the L'Chaim-
palooza next year. LI
