the Nazis in 1943. When Kurt
Waldheim was revealed, in
1987, to have been a Nazi col-
laborator, he was promptly in-
vited to make official state visits
to Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Iran
and Iraq (by contrast, the Unit-
ed States and many other coun-
tries barred Mr. Waldheim from
visiting).
More recently, in 1989 and
1990, the PLO journals El
Istiglal and Balsam published
articles denying that the Holo-
caust had taken place. The ar-
ticles asserted: "While Jews are
complaining about their treat-
ment by the Gestapo, the truth
is that they were served healthy
food as proven by the dining

rooms observed there" ... "Nazi
camps were more civilized than
Israeli prisons" ... "The lie con-
cerning the gas chambers en-
abled the Jews to establish the
State of Israel."
Many media portrayals of the
Arab world claim that the PLO
and the various Arab states
have given up their irrational
dream of annihilating Israel and
have become moderate and rea-
sonable. But the extreme nature
of the attacks by Arab and Mus-
lim governments on Schindler's
List make one wonder if their
attitudes toward Jews and the
Jewish state have sincerely
changed.

t college, many youths'
first time away from
home, a seemingly com-
mitted Jew may forgo
campus Hillel and Shabbat din-
ner for fraternity parties and
free munchies at happy hour.
As chairman of the Jewish
Community Council's college
fair task force, Howard Wallach
is well aware of the pressures
and concerns which enter into
everyday-campus life for Jew-
ish students.
In hopes of giving parents
and students a better sense of
what is realistic to expect, the
Jewish Community Council
presents its second Jewish Col-
lege Fair at 6:45 p.m. April 18
at the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center.
Various local organizations
co-sponsor the event.
Unlike last year's fair where
student groups from 11 colleges
set up booths to answer ques-
tions, university recruiters and
alumni from 18 campuses —
ranging in scope from Oakland
Community College to Colum-
bia University — will focus on
more formal informational pre-
sentations.
In addition, the fair is chang-
ing to a Monday evening from
a Sunday morning as more
high-school students are in con-
gregational classes at that time.
`This is only our second year.
We need to try different formats
to see what works best and re-
fine it," Mr. Wallach said of the
changes in the fair.
"Talk To Us," a University of
Michigan theater troupe, will
perform again, considering in-
terfaith dating and anti-Semi-

tism and bigotry in its acts.
Discussion groups led by Jew-
ish high-school teachers and col-
lege students follow.
Mr. Wallach said he is hop-
ing for 200 participants in the
11th and 12th grades, a 70-per-
son jump from 1993 atten-
dance.
"We don't expect to solve all
the problems on campus in two
hours," Mr. Wallach said. 'The
community here tends to be
narrowly focused. We live
around Jews and socialize with
them. Many students are not
sensitized until they get to cam-
pus.
"I'm hoping we'll open their
eyes to the concerns and issues
they will face away from home,
to make them think about new
ideas."
