is running against it, blaming
the government for the esca-
lating murders of Jews, and
their campaign has caught on.
A popular new bumper sticker
has appeared — "You voted Ra-
bin, and you got Arafat."
The left, having gotten a
strong political boost from the
Hebron massacre, is back on
the defensive, particularly since
Yasser Arafat showed such pub-
lic indifference to the slaughter
in Afula. Peace Now, whose
theme is usually that Israel
must be more conciliatory to-
ward the Palestinians, admon-
ished Mr. Arafat in a
newspaper advertisement head-
lined, "He who makes peace
must denounce terror!"
Mr. Rabin reacted to the Afu-
la incident — and the terrorist
shooting spree that killed one
Israeli and wounded three oth-
ers on the following day — by
locking the Palestinians behind
the Green Line indefinitely. He

did the same thing a year ago,
after the uncommonly lethal
month of March 1993.
That time it worked: Israel
enjoyed relative quiet until the
latter part of the year. But nova,
with the army preparing to
make way for local PLO rule in
the Gaza Strip and Jericho,
Army Gen. Matan Vilna'i,
whose command includes Gaza,
warned that terror attacks
could well increase during the
current closure, partly because
Palestinians figure they can
score "points" with the incom-
ing regime by attacking Israeli
soldiers and civilians.
Hamas is now promising to
use missiles instead of just axes
and guns against the Jewish en-
emy and there are likely to be
bloody days ahead.
For Israelis at large, they
would be days of rage. For the
National Camp, they would also
be days of opportunity. LI

Palestinians Testify
Goldstein Was Alone

Jerusalem (JTA) — Dr.
Baruch Goldstein acted
alone when he killed at least
29 Palestinians at a Hebron
mosque, three Palestinian
guards said on the last day of
hearings of a commission of
inquiry.
The guards gave their
testimony before the
Shamgar Commission in-
vestigating the Feb. 25
mosque killings.
The guards had initially
refused to testify before an
Israeli panel, and only did so
after they had been sub-
poenaed to appear before the
commission.
The three confirmed that

Mr. Goldstein, a Kiryat
Arba settler well known to
them, had carried out the
murders single-handedly.
Their testimony con-
tradicted that of other Pales-
tinians who told the com-
mission that Mr. Goldstein
had not acted alone.
A preliminary inquiry by
the Israeli army reached the
conclusion that Mr. Golds-
tein did not have an ac-
complice.
"He was alone. There was
nobody else with him," one
of the guards, Ismail
Hashlamon, told the com-
mission.
He also told the panel that,
