This is the right-wing's key
political weakness — while
claiming correctly that terror
has gotten much worse since
the Oslo agreement was signed,
and promising that it could slow
the killings, the opposition does
not have a feasible way of end-
ing the conflict, of offering peace
on terms the Palestinians might
accept.
"I am often asked: Would the
Palestinian Arabs accept au-
tonomy? My answer is that they
would accept it if they knew Is-
rael wouldn't give them an in-
dependent state," Mr.
Netanyahu wrote in The
Jerusalem Post.
But for 13 years, Israel was
run by Likud governments that
were steadfast as could be
against a Palestinian state.

swore never to part with any
land, offering the Palestinians
autonomy and nothing more,
yet the Palestinians didn't ac-
cept it. Their counter-offer was
the intifada.
Mr. Netanyahu's thesis has
been tested at length, and found
wanting.
But perhaps Mr. Nachman
is right — how to make peace is
not the issue just now. The is-
sue is terror, and the opposition
