bein spent six years in the Unit-
ed States in the office-supply
field — in his case, his compa-
ny, Altra, marketed ready-to-
assemble office furniture.
Despite the expected compe-
tition for customers and for
prime retail space, both by Su-
perOffice and by veteran Israeli
office-supply outlets that are
also getting into the supermar-
ket game, Mr. Fishbein says he
views the presence of other out-
lets as a plus.
"I think it is advantageous
SuperOffice is here," Mr. Fish-
bein said. "Together, Office De-
pot and SuperOffice will change
the way people buy office sup-
plies in Israel." El

Merrill Lynch
Joins Zone Effort

American businessmen behind
the establishment of a Free
Export Processing Zone (14'EPZ)
in Israel announced that Mer-
rill Lynch will join Salomon
Brothers as lead under-
writers for the development of
the zone.
Salomon Brothers agreed to
underwrite the effort about a
month ago. Merrill Lynch was
waiting to see how the legisla-
tion establishing the FEPZ was
faring.
Final FEPZ legislation is ex-
pected to be approved at the end
of the month.
David Yerushalmi, chairman
of the Israel Export Develop-
ment Co., said something is be-
ing worked out on the issue of
foreign financial services that
will be included in the final
FEPZ legislation.
Mr. Yerushalmi has con-
tended that foreign financial
services are essential to the
FEPZ's operations, while the
Bank of Israel has opposed
them for fear they may under-
mine its control of banking ac-
tivities.
Mr. Yerushalmi said, "We've
turned the corner," and the fi-
nal bill will include foreign fi-
nancial services language to the
liking of all parties, including
the Bank of Israel.
