port group and eve.n a misan-
thrope group for Reople who
need their space.
Though far fewer in number,
support groups also are alver-
lised in the Hebrew press.
These include Alcoholics Anony-
mous and Second Generation
Holocaust Survivors, the latter
founded by native Israeli
Nahum Itzkovich.
"As a psychologist, I know the
natural reserve people feel with
professionals. The people in our
group share the same pain and
frustration and they come to re-
lease these feelings. I'm a firm
believer in self-help groups."
Ms. Bergman and Ms. Beren
feel there is a definite social stig-
ma among Israelis involved in
getting professional help. But
the attraction of being respon-
sible for one's own fate and cop-
ing with people in similar
situations on equal terms has
added to the growth in the num-
ber of support groups.
"When you go to a profes-
sional, you are the patient and
he is the one constantly giving
the support. The relationship
does not exist on equal terms.
In a self-help group, there is a
give and take in which people
learn from each other and in-
crease their sense of self-worth,"
Ms. Beren says.
Many English speakers have
chosen to start their own groups
in English, feeling better able
to express themselves in their
native tongue.
Debbie, the mother of a 7-year-
old boy with neurofibromatosis
(benign tumors in the nervous
system), which can cause severe
deformities, was involved in a
support group in the United
States. In Israel, hoping to start
a parents support group in Eng-
lish, she found herself part of the
actual group itself, which con-
sisted of native Israelis.
"I like the meetings," Debbie
says. "They are intimate and
personal and give us a lot of
emotional support. But Fm still
trying to start a group for par-
ents because I think we have
different problems and differ-
ent needs."
Debbie is working in con-
junction with Ms. Beren's de-
partment to establish such a
group.
Although the Clearinghouse
focuses mainly on health, wel-
fare and aliyah issues, support
groups are springing up in a
wide variety of areas: people af-
fected by the Scud missiles,
mortgage holders and parents
for better education.
Even immigrants from the
former Soviet Union are begin-
ning to establish self-help
groups of their own. At a recent
meeting of mortgage holders
held in Russian, 400 people
showed up. O
