emerge intact, the days of puri-
ty far outweigh the days of im-
purity, in a ratio of either 7 to

is doubled in the case of the

female physiology in which the
death-life drama is played out.
This juxtaposition between
death and life is not at all
strange. The two come togeth-
er at every serious operation
and the "binding of Isaac"
proves that only one who is will-
ing to sacrifice his life fora high-
er ideal actually lives a
meaningful life. In Israel, we
have just experienced such a
death-like connection with Yom
Hazikaron, the Memorial Day
for the soldiers who fell in Is-
rael's battles for existence,
falling out the very day before
Yom Ha'atzma'ut, Israel Inde-
pendence Day.

Hazikaron, Yom Ha'atzma'ut
expresses that the painful birth
— and existence — of Israel is a
result of the continued sacrifices
of the soldiers. The contiguous
placement of Yom Hazikaron
(brush with death and destruc-
tion) and Yom Ha'atzma'ut (the
birth of the state of Israel) par-
allels the Torah's understand-
ing of childbirth in our portion.
Tazria does not only deal with
the birth of a child, but it leaves
us with an understanding of a
relationship between a brush
with death and the ultimate gift
of life. We come to learn that
just as death and life are inti-
mately, painfully and mysteri-
ously connected, so too the
states of purity and impurity
exist in an eternal dialogue.
I cannot think of any moment
in the year more poignant than
the closing moments of Yom
Hazikaron as thousands gath-
er in a large square in Efrat in
the waning light of the day,
alone, plaintive Kail Maleh Ra-
hamim prayer piercing the sky,
slowly giving way to the thun-
derous explosion of fireworks
celebrating Yom Ha'atzma'ut.
May our celebrations of life al-
ways be far more numerous
than our memories of death. 0
