ee /-' Family Fun ay B'nai David Won't Build ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR S ome 200 members of Congregation B'nai David voted April 10 to discontinue plans to build in West Bloomfield and con- centrate on merging with an- other area congregation. B'nai David last week re- ceived a letter from a bank, of- fering to provide up to $1.5 million toward a new building. The congregation had sought $2.1 million to build a 300-seat sanctuary on Maple Road be- tween Drake and Halsted. The 10-acre parcel is owned pri- vately by B'nai David mem- bers. The April 10 vote, by a 3-2 margin, halts all efforts of the congregation to replace their Sunday, April 24 1:00-4:00 p.m. Jewish Community Center • Jimmy Prentis Morris Building • 15110 West 10 Mile Road, Oak Park Help Build A Future For Our Community! Efforts now turn toward merger. Southfield facility. The vote to quickly pursue merger efforts was nearly unanimous. B'nai David President Lawrence Traison said the votes made the congregation's future "a little brighter today than it was last Friday." He said the bank had offered more mortgage money than it had previously, "but my personal opinion is that it is not enough." Mr. Traison hopes a merg- er with another congregation can be quickly arranged so that B'nai David will not be forced into temporary quarters in June. The city of Southfield purchased the building four years ago and the B'nai David board voted earlier this month to vacate the facility May 31. "This has been a very taxing thing for our members," said Mr. Traison, "but we will come out of this. It is different times and our competition is differ- ent, and we'll have to fight a lit- tle harder to keep the B'nai David name going. "It won't be the B'nai David of old," Mr. Traison said, "but it will be a new B'nai David." , Link the past to the future.
