F

or Menahse Shemeshe,
an Israeli native, Yom
Hazikaron is a day he re-
fleets on the tears he has
shed and funerals he has at-
tended for friends who gave
their lives defending Israel.
On Tuesday night, Mr.
Shemeshe, who left Israel four
years ago, reflected again at a
memorial program at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center.
"This gives us a chance to

"This gives us
a chance to

MOTHER'S DAY (

commemorate the fallen," he

said, "especially lost friends. On
a day like today, you go through
the basics. You recall where
you've come from and what
you've gone through and come
to appreciate life and the life
they have given. Yom
Hazikaron is the only chance to
commemorate the memories of
those who paid the highest
price someone can pay."
Tuesday's program, which
was attended by more than 700
people, featured Shlomo
Avineri, former director gener-
al of the Israeli foreign ministry,
and concluded with the dedica-
tion of a permanent memorial
for those Israelis who have fall-
en in battle.
The memorial, designed by
local architect Robert Ziegel-

man, replaces a temporary stat-
ue. It is situated outside the
main entrance of the
Maple/Drake JCC.
During his address, Mr.
Avineri discussed how global
changes, including the break-
down of the alliance between
the former Soviet Union and
Arab nations, has been benefi-
cial to Israel.
"The balance has changed in
our favor because the Soviet
Union is not there anymore,"
Mr. Avineri said. 'The situation
has changed dramatically in
our favor.
"We are stronger, and out of
strength come assurance, wis-
dom and a willingness to take
a risk.
"As an Israeli, I am moved to
be sitting here in Detroit know-
ing how all of you feel and how
you mourn and hope with us.
This is an extraordinary expe-
rience for me."
Tuesday's program was over-
whelming and emotional for
West Bloomfield resident Mira
Eisenberg, who remembers
having to pull people in to par-
ticipate in the area Yom
Hazikaron programs 15 years
ago.
"I'm standing here after
many years of educating the
community. It's great to see
what we have achieved," she
said. "It makes me shiver to
think I've lost some people who
were very dear to me, and I
have a special pride in my
heart. Today brings me back to
my army days and it makes me
think about the car that just ex-
ploded right where I used to live
in Israel." 0

Sterling Heights lawyer
accused of making ob-
scene and anti-Semitic
remarks to two Jewish
attorneys has been found guilty
of professional misconduct.
The decision rendered by the
Attorney Discipline Board did
not state which of the allega-
tions Matthew Beer was guilty
of, except that professional mis-
conduct had occurred.
In an incident last summer,
Joel Serlin and Barry Rosen-

A

baum indicated in a formal
complaint that Mr. Beer called
them "Hebes," used obscene
language and pushed Mr. Ser-
lin in a courthouse corridor.
Next month, the board will
hold a sanctions hearing to de-
cide what actions, if any, will be
taken against Mr. Beer. The
board can either reprimand
him, suspend him for a specif-
ic time, or revoke his law li-
cense. ❑
