SEMCOG Gathers
Travel Data

Residents should be aware that
the Southeast Michigan Coun-
cil of Governments (SEMCOG)
is conducting "TravelCount '94"
a transportation research sur-
vey, in cooperation with the
Michigan Department of
Transportation and the Feder-
al Highway Administration.
A four-part transportation
research effort, TravelCount '94
is intended to ensure federal
transportation funding, esti-
mated at more than $10 billion
in the next 20 years, is spent
wisely and efficiently.
More than 50,000 people will
be involved in the effort.A ba-
sic "origin-and-destination sur-
vey" will include 7,200
households in the greater met-
ropolitan area, tracking the
travel activities of approxi-
mately 18,000 area residents.
Another element will survey
24,000 motorists traveling in
the metropolitan area; in addi-
tion, several hundred truck dri-
vers and several thousand
public transit riders will be sur-
veyed about their travel activ-
ities.
Household survey partici-
pants will be contacted by tele-
phone. Participants will
complete a travel diary to de-
termine where and how im-
provements are made to
freeways and highways, as well
as other key elements of the
transportation system, includ-
ing safety, congestion manage-
ment and public transit.
In the external surveys, li-
cense plate numbers observed
on freeways will generate mail
questionnaires to vehicle own-
ers.
The household survey will
take place through June in-
volving households in the sev-
en-county SEMCOG region.
SEMCOG officials say ex-
traordinary measures are in
place to ensure the protection
of participants' privacy. All in-
dividual information from
household diaries will be blend-
ed into the other 7,199 diaries,
then individual data will be de-
stroyed. All research survey re-
ports will include only
cumulative data, without any
individual information distrib-
uted.

tact the TravelCount '94 Hot-
line, 1-800-961-3334.0
