Zukerman once told Mr.
Weinstein that he believed
there was even a motor inter-
face between playing a
musical instrument and an
individual sport.
Many concert musicians,
particularly violinists, play
sports to maintain the fitness
and stamina required for per-
forming. Shlomo Mintz,
however, a world renowned
violin virtuoso and musical
director of the Israel
Chamber Orchestra, did not
play football as a boy for fear
of injuring his hands. Mr.
Weinstein's initial invitation

Under Mr. Weinstein's
tutelage, Mr. Mintz proved
almost as much a natural
with a bow and arrow as with
a bow and violin.
Mr. Weinstein, who had
been involved in a musical
retreat for violiiiists in the
pastoral setting of Kibbutz
Eilon in the Western Galilee,
decided it was time to test his
theory on a larger scale. With
the help of kibbutz musical
director and teacher Gilad
Sheba, archery classes were
added to the master classes
for young Israeli violinists,
many of them new im-
migrants from the former
Soviet Union.
By the following summer,
this had developed into
Mastercourse — Keshet Eilon
(the Hebrew word "keshet"
means "bow" — both the
violinist's and the archer's),
hosting an international ar-
ray of students and violin
